As Chinese cinema celebrates its 120th anniversary, the 20th Huabiao Film Awards — the nation's highest cinematic honor — took place in the coastal city of Qingdao, Shandong province, for the first time on April 27.

Against the backdrop of mountains and sea, the ceremony marked a milestone for both the Chinese film industry and Qingdao's rise as a significant player in film production and innovation.

Established in 1957, the Huabiao Film Awards have honored films that resonate with audiences and reflect national pride. From the tender narratives of The Knot to the bold heroism of Wolf Warrior 2, each trophy symbolizes the craftsmanship and passion of Chinese filmmakers.

Over the past decade, Qingdao has become a magnet for the film industry, known for its sweeping coastlines and historic architecture that provide diverse settings.

The city has invested heavily in world-class film infrastructure, including the China Movie Metropolis, which opened in 2018. This facility has introduced advanced technologies such as China's first full-process virtual production platform, micron-level facial scanning, and new-generation LED virtual shooting.

Blockbusters like The Wandering Earth II and Creation of the Gods have utilized these resources for world-class visual storytelling.

By 2024, Qingdao's film base had hosted over 480 production teams and contributed more than 37 billion yuan ($5.1 billion) in box office revenue. The city has attracted 1,129 enterprises, served over 500 film and television crews, and registered nearly 500 projects.

Locally produced films have dominated key release seasons such as Spring Festival and achieved international acclaim, earning Oscar nominations and winning top domestic honors like the Golden Rooster Awards.

Supporting this industry boom is a comprehensive policy framework. Qingdao West Coast New Area has prioritized film as a key sector by launching a one-stop public service platform to streamline approvals, funding applications, and logistical support for film crews.

The establishment of China's first local film industry service center in 2021 has furthered this ecosystem, providing personalized services to filmmakers and accelerating project turnaround times.

Beyond production, Qingdao is nurturing a vibrant cultural economy. Initiatives such as film studio tours have introduced tens of thousands of students to the inner workings of movie-making.

Major events like the Qingdao Film and Television Expo have strengthened the city's brand as an international film capital.
