Haidian Science Park goes 'green'

Leader in technology to save energy, protect environment

Haidian Science Park goes 'green'
Its own technolgies ensure the ecology of Haidian is among the best in Beijing’s urban areas.

The Zhongguancun Haidian Science Park has become Beijing's most important hub for environmental protection and energy-saving industries, according to the park's administrative committee.

The development of those industries is aimed to boost the sustainable growth and address increasing environmental concerns of the city by using local cutting-edge technologies and intelligent resources, said the committee.

The park in Beijing's Haidian district is the core area of Zhongguancun National Innovation Demonstration Zone, the largest high-tech zone in China that includes Beijing's 16 industrial parks.

The park has unique advantages in research relating to environmental protection and energy conservation, or "green" industries, with a number of top universities and other unique resources.

Its environmental protection industry with nationally leading innovative capacity is not only a main pillar for the area's high-tech industries, but has also plays a major role in upgrading Beijing's economic model, said the administrative committee.

Statistics show that more than 60 percent of the city's environmental protection enterprises are located in Green Industrial Park, itself located in Haidian Science Park, far more than other industrial parks in Beijing.

Haidian Science Park is also home to about 10 percent of China's enterprises focused on energy-saving services.

The committee said green industries have shown encouraging development in recent years and are playing an increasingly important role in boosting the economy of the park.

In 2013, the energy-saving and environmental protection industries in the park generated 81 billion yuan ($13 billion) in revenue, an increase of 35.68 percent from 2012, statistics showed.

With a number of nationally leading corporations in fields relating to energy conservation and environmental protection, the park has shown a notable competitive advantage nationwide, especially in renewable energy, water recycling and emissions reduction, according to the administrative committee.

It said sectors related to air pollution prevention and control and water treatment have shown great strength. The two sectors in Haidian Science Park generate 45 percent of the revenues in all green industries in Beijing.

Datang Technologies & Engineering Co and Beijing Guodian Longyuan Environmental Engineering Co in the park are among the largest companies focusing on air pollution prevention and control in the country.

As well, leading innovators Beijing Remote Power Renewable Energy Technology Development Co, CGN Solar Energy Development Co and Sinovel Wind Group Co are dedicated to new energy and energy efficiency. Large groups working in the field include China Sciences General Energy & Environment Co and Beijing Origin Water Technology Co.

Haidian Science Park is also a demonstration base for integrated management of flue gas in China.

Products from companies in the park have changed the construction and transportation industries with their innovative technologies. Some have now entered international markets including Europe, the United States, Japan and South Korea.

Industrial alliances

Local authorities said an innovative move in the park is the formation of industrial alliances between companies and research institutes to facilitate sharing of resources and expand the scale of local industries.

The alliances have helped local enterprises establish new international standards in the fields of energy efficiency and environmental protection.

BII Group, China Telecom, Tsinghua University and Beijing Jiaotong University with support from a group of other organizations around the world initiated the Ubiquitous Green Community Control Network - or IEEE 1888 - a global standard that combines information and communication technologies with environmental protection and energy saving.

The standard enables large commercial buildings to use less energy and have a smaller environmental footprint.

A range of solutions based on the standard have been developed and applied in demonstrative projects such as intelligent buildings, intelligent oil fields and intelligent farms.

To help facilitate sharing of resources, the park recently held a seminar to introduce new products, technologies and services offered by local enterprises and institutions.

Themed "Green City, Smart Life", the seminar brought together more than 21 enterprises from different green industries covering energy efficiency in buildings and transportation, water conservation through efficient irrigation and use of rainwater, carbon fixation and a range of smart solutions in various fields.

The event worked as a platform for companies to find potential clients and clients to look for products they need.
